Privacy Notice Simon Cowell has responded to claims that the winner of this year’s Britain’s Got Talent was a ‘fix’. Singer Sydnie Christmas was crowned the 2024 winner during the live final on Sunday night (2 June) which saw her burst into floods of tears as the stage was covered in confetti. The young singer’s rendition of Somewhere Over The Rainbow saw her steal the show and scoop up the whopping £250,000 cash prize, while also securing a slot to sing at the Royal Variety Performance later this year. “I don’t know what to say,” she told Declan Donnelly after it was announced.

“I cannot believe the amount of love I’ve felt. I am overwhelmed with love and it’s the most amazing thing and I wish every person in this room feels the way I do with this love, it’s amazing, thank you so much.” Moments before Sydnie’s triumphant win, head judge Simon hit back at claims that the show had been a ‘fix’ – saying none of the acts in last night’s show were professionals who had already made a career performing. He said on the night: “Winning is important, but, you know, getting into this final and importantly, doing something great, will actually make a difference. “You know what was interesting? I worked out, I don’t think a single act tonight were professionals. They all had a regular job, yeah, and they did something extraordinary.”

This comes after it was revealed Sydnie has previous experience on stage from working on a cruise ship and in a German stage production of Starlight Express. However, her performance of Somewhere Over The Rainbow proved to be the winning act. So much so that it left Simon feeling “very emotional” earlier on in the show. Speaking of her performance, he said: “That was really something special, that lyric felt so personal to you about what you must have wanted over the years with a god-given talent like that and for whatever reason you’ve been ignored.

“I actually felt very emotional.” Amanda Holden also loved Sydnie’s voice and was drowned out by thunderous applause as she said: “I know how long you have waited for this moment, it was utterly spellbinding and perfect in every way. It was just gold dust.” While there could only be one winner, the BGT final also saw performances from Alex Mitchell, Abigail & Afronitaaa, Haribow, Jack Rhodes, Trixy, Northants Sing Out, Mike Woodhams, Innocent Masuku, The Ssaulabi Performance Troupe and The Trickstars.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
