Privacy NoticeAlex Salmond, the 69-year-old leader of the Alba Party, has tragically passed away after suffering what is believed to be a heart attack shortly after giving a speech in North Macedonia. In a statement given to the Daily Record’s sister paper, the Sunday Mail, it was disclosed by an acquaintance that Salmond was at an event today when he suddenly collapsed and died from what is suspected to be a heart attack. He leaves behind his wife, Moira. His passing occurred on Saturday while he was engaged in the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy Forum held in Ohrid, having spoken on a panel just the day before with his deputy, Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh. An official from the Alba Party announced his death, prompting a wave of heartfelt tributes within the political sphere. Despite their complex past, Scotland’s First Minister and SNP chief, John Swinney, shared his profound grief over Salmond’s sudden departure: “I am deeply shocked and saddened at the untimely death of the former first minister Alex Salmond, and I extend my deepest condolences to Alex’s wife Moira and to his family.”

Swinney went on to honour Salmond’s hefty impact on politics, commenting: “Over many years, Alex made an enormous contribution to political life not just within Scotland, but across the UK and beyond.”, reports the Express. Alex Salmond, the former First Minister of Scotland, is survived by his wife Moira. The Daily Record reports touching tributes pouring in: “Alex worked tirelessly and fought fearlessly for the country that he loved and for her independence. He took the Scottish National Party from the fringes of Scottish politics into government and led Scotland so close to becoming an independent country.” Adding, “There will be much more opportunity to reflect in the coming days, but today all of our thoughts are with Alex’s family and his many friends right across the political spectrum.”
