Privacy NoticeJohn Cowen, a former Countdown champion, has been charged with stabbing a fellow contestant at an event in Blackpool last month. The 30 year old maths graduate was arrested following the alleged attack at the Countdown in Blackpool 2024 tournament on September 14. The annual event, held at the Wainwright Club, sees previous winners from the Channel 4 gameshow compete for the highest score. According to the Blackpool Gazette, police were called to the scene and a man in his 20s was taken to hospital for treatment. John, who scored the third highest total in the 2017 series of Countdown and spotted the nine-letter word ‘Spreading’, is facing charges of section 18 – wounding with intent and possession of a bladed article. After his initial success, he appeared in 11 more episodes, winning eight consecutive contests before being defeated, reports the Express.

He later appeared in the series finals as the third seed in December 2017, where he beat Michael Pfeffer in the quarter-finals but lost to Bradley Horrocks after giving an incorrect solution to his final selection. Two years later, he returned for the Championship of Champions XV series, losing once again to Bradley in the quarter-final. John, from Morecambe, Lancashire, was remanded in custody and is due to have his trial at Preston Crown Court.Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
