The Queens Hotel, Leeds This 232-room Art Deco hotel, which has welcomed guests including Nelson Mandela and Princess Grace of Monaco, had a £16 million revamp last year. Our room was a chic and spacious double featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, trendy panelling and a relaxing seating area – but we were here to explore. First stop was the four-star hotel’s Grand Pacific restaurant and bar, where the moody decor in blacks, browns and golds pays homage to the golden age of high society. After a lychee cocktail, we were shown to our velvet booth and we dined on Asian fusion cuisine, choosing the duck gyozas and roast cod loin, followed by strawberry and hibiscus trifle. The elegant high tea in Café Pacific is also not to be missed.

The hotel is a quick two-minute walk from Leeds train station

The hotel is a two-minute walk from Leeds train station and a seven-minute walk from Leeds Art Gallery, where we soaked up some contemporary British art before a spot of retail therapy. The Corn Exchange houses indie shops and eateries, while the various arcades cater for every shopping need. Look out for the Yorkshire Soap Co shop with its striking pink frontage. Double rooms at The Queens hotel are from £92. See thequeensleeds.co.uk Roomzzz, Newcastle Newcastle is renowned for its nightlife and the bars around the Bigg Market are where the Geordie Shore gang used to live it large. But it’s not all about the Jaegerbombs. The city boasts some impressive architecture, including the Norman chapel and Edwardian Central Arcade, plus a great art scene. We made our base at Roomzzz apartments, close to the sights of Quayside, where you can choose from a cheerful Smart Studio or a two-bed Liberty Suite. All options boast kitchenettes, so you can enjoy the city like a local, with a complimentary grab-and-go breakfast in hand.

A wonderful facial and massage at Clarins Skin Spa in Fenwick, the city’s flagship department store, was just the tonic before we headed to St James’ Park, home of Newcastle United Football Club, for a tour of the stadium. The Instagram-worthy GB Cupcakery is perfect for post-match sweet treats. Other foodie go-to spots include Pleased To Meet You, offering oysters, premium steaks and an inviting gin bar, Horticulture for a brunch bursting with seasonal, locally sourced produce and The Muddler, which offers impressive Pan-Asian cuisine and unique cocktails. Midweek rooms are from £109; weekends from £139, at roomzzz.com/aparthotels/newcastle. Book a St James’ Park tour at nufc.co.uk and Clarins facial at fenwick.co.uk. There’s an open bar-come-communal workspace and 126 stunningly designed rooms, which all evoke a laidback home-from-home vibe for those working on the move. We stayed in a King Superior Corner Room, which had beautiful views of the city, not only from the bedroom but also from the luxurious freestanding tub in the bathroom.

The hotel is a celebration of the rich history of craftsmanship in Shoreditch, demonstrated by the wrought-iron staircase and hammered-copper reception desk, as well as the 21st century creativity that resonates in the area. From £192 on a room-only basis at hartshoreditch.com Hotel Indigo, Bath Occupying a beautiful butter-toned Georgian terrace, close to the River Avon, tourist sites, shops and fudge parlours, this four-star hotel lives up to Bath’s period-drama vibe. But while the facade is classic 18th century, the interior has a chic, modern spin. The themed rooms, including Romance & Mischief and Literary Hideaway, have ridiculously comfortable Hypnos beds, Nespresso machines and walk-in rainforest showers.

Dine at The Elder, the hotel’s splendid (but never stuffy) wood-panelled restaurant. You’ll need to book ahead to ensure you get your fill of wild game and sustainably sourced local food. An excellent full English breakfast is on offer, too. Bath Abbey provides a spectacular backdrop for local street performers, while at the nearby Roman Baths you can immerse yourself in the city’s history – although not the spa water itself. For a Roman-style dip, head to the Thermae Bath Spa, which uses the same natural thermal water, but treated to make it safe for swimming. Also take in Bath’s shopping streets, which lead you towards the sweeping majesty of the Royal Crescent and Royal Victoria Park with its dazzling botanical gardens.
