Privacy NoticeA British influencer known for his daring stunts tragically died after falling from Spain’s highest bridge while attempting a social media stunt. The 26-year-old digital creator is reported to have fallen from the towering 630ft (192 metre) Castilla-La Mancha bridge, which overlooks the Tagus River and is located 90 minutes southwest of Madrid, in Talavera de la Reina early this morning. He was reportedly climbing the bridge to film a social media stunt around 7.15am when the tragic incident occurred. The unnamed Brit was said to be accompanied by a 24 year old friend when he met his untimely death. National Police, local firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene but were unable to save him.
The Castilla-La Mancha cable-stayed bridge in Talavera is an engineering work that crosses the Tagus River and connects the two banks of the city. It is 318 meters long and 192 meters high, making it the highest cable-stayed bridge in Spain and the third in Europe. Its design is modern and elegant, with two leaning towers that support the deck by means of 58 steel cables. The bridge was inaugurated in 2016 and has become a symbol of Talavera and the region.
Talavera de la Reina Town Council confirmed the death in a statement, emphasising that climbing the bridge is “totally banned” and “cannot be done under any circumstances”. The statement read: “The Councillor for Citizen Security, Macarena Munoz, has confirmed the death of a young man after he fell from the Castilla-La Mancha bridge. He was a 26-year-old Englishman who fell while climbing the aforementioned bridge, something which the councillor has made clear is totally prohibited and that we have reiterated on numerous occasions cannot be done under any circumstances.” A spokesperson for a regional government-run emergency coordination centre confirmed: “We received the first call at 7.14am today, saying a young man had fallen while he was climbing the Castilla-La Mancha Bridge. The victim, who was aged 26, was pronounced dead at the scene.”, reports the Mirror. They continued: “National Police, local police, firefighters from Talavera de la Reina and an emergency ambulance was sent to the scene but there was nothing any of the emergency responders could do to save him.”
The influencer tragically fell off a bridge after attempting to climb it
The bridge, which features 152 wire ropes and cost nearly €74 million (£62 million) to build, was opened on October 17 2011. It was initially considered a waste of money by local and national media due to low traffic and was often referred to as the “bridge to nowhere.” There have been previous incidents of individuals climbing the bridge without protection, including two young bloggers who posted videos on social media a year ago and two youngsters who were reported for the same stunt in 2016. The statement continued: “The young man was accompanied by another 24-year-old Englishman. According to what we have been able to establish, they had come to Talavera to climb the bridge and create content for social media, which has resulted in this unfortunate and sad outcome. Ms Munoz stated: “The judge and the forensic doctor have already authorised the removal of the body, which has been transferred to the funeral parlour. We have made it clear on several occasions that it’s not something that can be done in any circumstances.” The identity of the deceased man has not been confirmed, and a post-mortem examination is still pending.Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
