Privacy NoticeThe Great British Bake Off winner of 2012, John Whaite, and his fianc é Paul Atkins were once residents of a converted military hospital apartment down in London. Before you check out a quick gallery of snaps, though, John, 34, confessed this week that he fell victim to the dreaded Strictly Come Dancing ‘curse’ two years ago while busting some moves with pro Johannes Radebe. Speaking to The Times, the chef revealed that he and Paul ‘spent time apart’ during the ballroom series; “I fell in love with [Johannes]. I can’t speak for him – because I’m not allowed to, legally – but it felt like there was love there. We had such similar stories growing up; the homophobia, the bullying, coming out, coming to terms with our sexuality, as any queer kid would. I still love Johannes. Of course I do.” Despite this awkward bump in the road, though, the engaged couple are back on track. “I look at Paul and what he’s put up with over the years and how he’s nurtured me and stood by me, and who would throw that away? I couldn’t.”

The couple sold their London home in 2016 and decided to move north, but John has shared peeks into his former abode in the past and it’s super stylish. The stunning converted military hospital apartment in South East London is not only spacious but super chic to boot. It’s a one-bed with gorgeous interiors including a floral wall and vintage mirror.

There are also intriguing brick walls and, of course, state-of-the-art cooking appliances, given John’s profession as a baking pro. John previously shared with Right Move: “The size of the kitchen is what sold it to me, as well as the beautiful grounds. “I spent three very happy years here – my second and third books were written from the kitchen. And my third book was photographed there (the shelves on the front cover are in the lounge).”

The area was lovely and leafy

There’s a real rustic vibe in the space, with exposed brick work and industrial styling in the dining area. Framed by fairy lights and candlelight the space is cosy despite its bright and airy layout. Clearly with an eye for interiors, John placed a large dining table in one room with stylish grey plates set around it and a brass bathtub of flowers in the centre. The flat, in London’s borough of Greenwich, also has a leafy area surrounding it too and sits in a prime location, abstone’s throw from Eltham Station, Kidbrooke Station and Woolwich Dockyard Station.
