Privacy NoticeThe One Show star Ronan Keating has opened up on the heartbreaking ‘reason’ behind the tragic death of his beloved mum. The Boyzone star, 47, shared details of his mum’s breast cancer diagnosis and confessed she’d “still be alive today’ if they had ‘known more”. During an appearance on Good Morning Britain Ronan spoke about his summer performance at Kew Gardens before moving on to his experience with cancer in his family after losing his mum to the disease. In a heartbreaking chat, he shared: “My mum passed away in 1998, it’s hard to believe it’s so long ago, it feels like yesterday at times.”

He continued: “We were a very naive family, we didn’t know much about cancer and we had to educate ourselves quickly and I think if we had known more, we do believe that our mum would still be alive today. “If she was more educated about cancer, she would be alive today.” “She died of the most curable form of breast cancer, but she came from a generation that found it very hard to go to the doctor and get checked when she realised she had a lump on her breast.

“So, that’s changed dramatically now, thank god and survival rates have increased massively, and I think it’s important for men to wake up to this too with testicle cancer and so on, we need to cop on big time, check ourselves regularly and if you find something, go to the doctor.” The pop star has suffered more than his fair share of heartache and in July last year tragically lost his older brother Ciaran. Ciaran, who was in his 50s, was sadly killed in a horror car crash when he and his wife Ann Marie had been travelling to watch their son, Ruairi, play for Cork City FC.

A year after the tragic loss, Ronan, who helped carry his brother’s coffin at the funeral, spoke to OK! at the Spring Ball in London and said the family are “doing alright” while dealing with their grief, something which he previously admitted was the “hardest time” of his life. Ciaran was the eldest of Ronan’s siblings, and the singer also has two older brothers, Gary and Gerard, and an older sister, Linda. Following the death of their mum, the family set up The Marie Keating Foundation, a charity that raises awareness of symptoms of the disease and support people having treatment.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
