Privacy NoticeA Place in the Sun presenter Ben Hillman had to step in and comfort an emotional couple on the Channel 4 show after their property search proved disappointing. House hunters Mark and Candy were searching for their dream Spanish retreat with Ben. The couple wanted a three-bed property with traditional character and had a budget of £77,000. Mark had plenty of construction experience, so he and Candy were open to have some renovating to do. However, Ben appeared to overestimate how much DIY the couple were willing to sign up for. As they looked around a second property, Candy appeared disappointed and said: “I’m just not feeling this at all.”

Ben, visibly taken aback, said: “I understood you incorrectly. I know you said a project is fine and the fact you are a builder as well. Have I run away with that?” Candy admitted that there may have been a misunderstanding. She added: “I’m finding that a little bit more daunting, the level of renovations so maybe we’ve not made it entirely clear?” She went on to tell Ben that she and Mark were prepared to renovate a room or two, but the work needed on the property he’d taken them to was far too much. Emotions started to run high and Candy struggled to hold her tears back. “It’s not what you’re imagining, not what you’re hoping for. This is a project too far, is it?” Ben queried. She replied: “It is, I’m sorry.” Ben reassured Candy and reminded her that the goal was to find the perfect property.

During the third house viewing, things started to look up as Candy and Mark appeared pleased with the property. Mark became overwhelmed as he explored the home, saying: “I’m getting emotional now! It’s lovely.” At the end of the episode, Mark and Candy put in an offer of £76,250 for their dream property in Spain. Ben made a call to check if the furniture was included in the price, and Mark was visibly nervous as they waited a response. After a tense few minutes, Ben broke the news that the furniture would indeed come with the house at the offered price. Mark and Candy burst into tears of happiness as they realised they’d secured their ideal property, following a rollercoaster of emotions.
