Privacy NoticeA TikTok beauty trend tried by Love Island host Maya Jama has been slammed by a dermatologist as he warns it could cause more harm than good. Everyone wants a complexion that’s soft and smooth but achieving it can be difficult and expensive. Perhaps this is why people have been going mad for a beauty hack using affordable nappy rash cream Sudocrem as an overnight mask as people claim it gives them glowing skin. BeautyTok creators have been sharing with their followers how they baste their faces overnight with the ointment to solve a range of issues from acne, fine lines and scarring. Following on from the success of the hack, which has over 10 million likes, Love Island presenter Maya Jama also revealed she was trying out the trend. Posting on Instagram, she shared a photo with the text: “Saw someone using sudocream as a face mask so tried it.” Despite its huge following and avid fans, the practice has been criticised by Dr. Hasan Benar, dermatologist at Dr. Elif Clinic, who explained it could cause long-term issues. Speaking to OK! he explained that the ointment does contain ingredients that could help clear skin, including zinc oxide, which has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, making it useful for soothing irritated skin and potentially calming acne. He said: “It also forms a protective barrier, which can lock in moisture and shield the skin from external irritants. Another ingredient, benzyl alcohol, has antiseptic properties that may help prevent infection.” Despite this, applying the cream overnight is not advised and could end up causing more problems. Dr Benar continued: “Sudocrem is thick and occlusive, meaning it forms a barrier over the skin. While this can be helpful in some cases, applying it overnight can clog pores, leading to breakouts, especially for those with acne-prone or oily skin. “Its rich texture might not allow the skin to breathe adequately, increasing the risk of congestion and irritation. Moreover, it may not be suitable for sensitive facial skin long-term, as it is formulated for diaper rash and other skin conditions, not as a facial moisturiser. “Sudocrem may cause some short and long-term issues if used overnight on the face, especially for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin. Short-term issues could include clogged pores, leading to acne breakouts or whiteheads.”
“In the long term, using a heavy, occlusive product like Sudocrem regularly on the face can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier function, potentially causing skin irritation or exacerbating conditions like acne, rosacea, or dermatitis.” Dr Benar revealed that anyone looking for an overnight cream should consider products that are lightweight, non-comedogenic (doesn’t clog pores), and designed to support skin repair and renewal. Ingredients to look out for in a suitable solution include retinol, tretinoin, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, salicylic acid, ceramides, and peptides. Do you have a story to share?
