Privacy NoticeThe family of a British doctor who vanished while walking in bad weather conditions on holiday, believe his Apple account may hold the clues to finding him. Tom Doherty was last in contact with his family five days ago, on Tuesday, August 8, after going hiking near Col d’Escots in the French Pyrenees. The 67-year-old, from St Albans, sent worrying messages to his family WhatsApp chat, at around 7.07pm, asking for help and saying that he had fallen and could not move. His daughter, Rachel Doherty, told the PA new agency he was in a mountainous area, she said: “He was sending us a few pictures of the scenery and then on Tuesday afternoon sent us one of clouds coming over the top of a mountain. He said ‘bugger’.” “We told him to be careful and urged him to come down. The last time we heard from him was Tuesday. “He told us he had fallen and couldn’t move. That’s all we’ve had since. The search party have found his car. We’re obviously very worried and extremely concerned for his welfare.”

Mr Doherty, a grandfather-of-one who has three daughters and one son and has been described as an avid and experienced walker, set off on Saturday, August 3. His wife, Anne Lyons, and one of his children have been at his last known location since Wednesday morning. Ms Doherty is also now heading to France to join the search party. According to his family, the retired doctor was a respected consultant of Tropical medicine who worked around the world and specialised in Malaria.

Since retiring almost a decade ago, he has spent most of his time in France. A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British man missing in France and are in touch with the local authorities.” In a post on social media, a woman who said Tom was her uncle wrote: “We desperately need to access his Mac laptop which has been locked as we have tried his passwords too many times.

“We need to get into it…. so that we can look at the last location of his last photos on iCloud and try and get into his Find My.” His family worry that he may have been caught in bad weather during his hike, as Mr Doherty had reportedly been hiking in the Ariege region near France’s border with Spain and Andorra, where there have been thunderstorms in recent days. He also sent a picture to his family of clouds coming over the top of a mountain. The search currently involves dogs and helicopters but has been hindered by poor visibility due to the low clouds in the area.

Tom’s disappearance comes after a series of British missing persons searches in foreign locations. Teenager Jay Slater fell to his death in a ravine on Tenerife this summer after trying to walk home from a night out on holiday, his body was found after a month long search.
