Privacy NoticeBen Miller, who played the lead detective in Death in Paradise from 2011 to 2014, before being tragically killed-off, is back in a new comedy. Ben stars in Austin, an eight-part series that will soon premiere in the UK after already aired in Australia. The cast list also features Bridget Jones star Sally Phillips, Michael Theo, who starred in Love on the Spectrum, Gian Carides and Roy Billing. The plot reads: “When much-loved children’s author Julian Hartswood (Ben) inadvertently causes a social media storm, his career and that of his illustrator wife Ingrid (Sally) appears to be over. That is until Austin (Michael) the neurodivergent son that Julian never knew existed, turns up out of the blue. “Could embracing this modern nuclear family be Julian’s route back from cancellation? Will Ingrid ever forgive him? One thing is for certain: if Julian thinks Austin is going to be a pushover, he’s in for a rude awakening.”

Ben is known for playing DI Richard Poole, the very first lead detective on Death in Paradise. Fans were horrified when Richard was killed by one of his school friends in the first episode of series three. Ben was succeeded by Kris Marshall, Ardal O’Hanlon and Ralf Little. Ex-EastEnders star Don Gilet will take over the role when the series returns later this year. Don has already been pictured in Guadeloupe where they film for the show, which is set on the fictional island of Saint Marie.

In a recent exclusive interview with OK!, Death in Paradise creator Robert Thorogood revealed that Ben wasn’t actually the first choice for the part – admitting that Would I Lie To You panellist David Mitchell was originally cast in the role. Robert said: “David was originally pencilled in to be the lead in Death in Paradise. When the show was green lit, he was attached, but it was about then that he’d fallen in love with Victoria [Coren]. “I’m not sure that I’ve asked him [to go on Death in Paradise] since because he’s been so busy. He’s now a lead detective in his own cosy crime TV show, which is coming out sometime or other,” he added, referring to BBC One’s upcoming series Ludwig.

Robert continued to say that because the series is called ‘Death in Paradise’, and not named after a detective, that it can go on forever. Robert explained: “We were very lucky actually because Tony Jordan – who was one of the masterminds of the show – has been keen from the start to call it Death in Paradise rather than name it after the detective.
