Privacy NoticeWhen Shona McGarty’s fiancé David planned his romantic proposal, he never could have expected the police would show up in the middle of their cosy picnic. Former EastEnders star Shona have exclusively revealed to OK! that she’s found the man of her dreams in musician David Bracken but his romantic proposal was gatecrashed by cops. The 31 year old said: ““The police turned up – they were making an announcement with a speaker and we couldn’t make out what they said. David went over to speak to them and I had no idea what he said because I was just eating cheese and crackers!” Thankfully David, who Shona started dating last year, was there to save the day – and also his plan to get down on one knee. He explained: “I went over to the police, who said, ‘Sorry we are just closing up the park’. I said, ‘Would you mind giving me five minutes as I am about to propose to my partner?’

“He looked at his watch and said of course, and best of luck. So, I told Shona to go stand at the waterfall in the park. I then put on our favourite song and had a dance with her before getting down on one knee.” Shona – who rose to fame playing Albert Square legend Whitney Dean, the adopted daughter of Bianca (Patsy Palmer) – said ‘yes’ to David as he popped the question with a sparkling emerald and diamond ring. And the backdrop for the occasion was as equally stunning. David revealed it had to be perfect and he picked none other than Kyoto Garden in London’s Kensington – somewhere that means a lot to Shona.

The actress explained: “I love Japanese culture and the spirituality of it. He brought a picnic which was really sweet. It was lovely, I was in my element but I didn’t think he was going to propose at all.” Now, as she enters a new and exciting chapter of her life – Shona made the difficult decision in 2023 to walk away from EastEnders after joining the cast aged 16 in 2008 – she’s got a wedding to plan and it sounds like things will certainly be busy. She explained: “Now that I have left EastEnders and my life is less hectic and I am really happy with David, my life is just in such a beautiful place. “We want to get married and enjoy married life.
