Privacy NoticeBBC’s Kirsty Wark couldn’t hold back the tears as she signed off from her final Newsnight episode, marking the end of an era after 30 years at the helm. For her swansong broadcast on Friday 12 July, she was joined by a host of familiar faces including ex-BBC journalist Lewis Goodall, Hollywood star Alan Cumming, Newsnight’s own political editor Nicholas Watt, and Martha Kearney, who is also set to depart from the Today programme. Kirsty, aged 69, holds the title of the longest-serving presenter on the BBC Two flagship current affairs show, having been a staple since 1993. Throughout her tenure, Kirsty earned accolades for her formidable interviewing skills, with former PMs Sir Tony Blair and Lord David Cameron among those who’ve praised her for giving them a grilling they’d never forget. As she concluded Friday’s show, Kirsty made her heartfelt farewell: “That’s all from me, it has been an honour and a blast. Thank you to all my wonderful colleagues, equally wonderful viewers.”, reports the Express.

The studio erupted in applause as she continued with a smile: “Keep on switching on… goodnight and good luck.” “Goodnight and good luck” was a saying made famous by legendary US news broadcaster Edward R Murrow, and was also the name of a 2005 movie based on his life. Overwhelmed by the moment and the outpouring of affection as she said the words, Kirsty was seen dabbing her eyes amidst the cheers and adulation from the audience and her fellow panellists. Tributes poured in not just from the comment sections filled with viewer messages but also from her peers across the media landscape. Piers Morgan took to Twitter to say: “The Jimmy Anderson of late-night news. Congrats on a brilliant run, Kirsty.”

Meanwhile, BBC’s Rachel Burden shared her admiration, tweeting: “I honestly love this woman so much. A terrific colleague and formidable comrade in supporting other women at the BBC.” Former First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon paid a glowing tribute to the broadcasting legend, saying: “To say you are a broadcasting titan, across the UK, but particularly here in Scotland would be an understatement. It’s hard to imagine that landscape without you.” She reminisced about her early encounter with the star: “I had a very, very first interview experience with you when I was just 17 or 18 years old. I was in awe of you then and it’s fair to say that hasn’t really changed.” Kirsty is set to grace the airwaves once more as she takes on presenting duties for BBC Radio 4’s show Front Row, starting at the Edinburgh Festival come August.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
