Privacy NoticeKate Garraway looked absolutely stunning as she graced the Pride Of Britain Awards solo, for the first time since her beloved husband Derek Draper’s passing. Derek, who was just 56 years old, lost his life in January after a prolonged fight against Covid-19 complications, which saw him spend the majority of four years in hospital care. The Good Morning Britain presenter and Derek had been open about their struggles, sharing their story through two heartfelt documentaries that captured their distressing experience as Derek battled the illness. At the poignant event on Monday evening, surrounded by celebrities honouring incredible feats from inspiring youths to heroic lifesavers, Kate shone brightly despite the circumstances.

Chatting with the Mirror at the event, Kate shared her feelings: “It’s always a hugely emotional night. You’re sometimes moved by the stories in a sad way but also by the courage. “I’ve been lucky enough to be invited POB throughout the journey of Derek being sick and this is the first one I’ve been to with him not with us and I think there will be an extra thing as he always loved it anyway as a ceremony and a show. It’s wonderful to see how people fight on.” Following Derek’s death, Kate took a break from her presenting duties on Good Morning Britain to spend precious moments with her family. Upon her return to the screen, she acknowledged the pain of working on the documentary, expressing that though it was tough, it was important to help others understand and possibly gain more support.

Kate Garraway has opened up about her husband Derek Draper’s struggles, revealing his feelings of inadequacy and the burden he felt he was placing on everyone. “One of the biggest frustrations was that he felt like a total failure, he felt like an incredible burden on the carers, on the system, on us and it didn’t matter what we said, he felt that burden, and he wanted to be a contributor,” she shared. In making the documentary ‘Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story’, Derek aimed to give back, as Kate explained: “Making this documentary [Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story] was his way of saying ‘I’m gonna speak up for the people that have supported me, the family but also those around me and the people within the care system.'” She continued with heartfelt emotion: “It’s wonderful to have the chance to honour him and also honour the millions.
