Privacy NoticeDeath In Paradise star Ardal O’Hanlon opened up about his decision to leave the popular BBC show. The 58 year old, who has appeared on programmes such as Father Ted and My Hero, was known for playing Death In Paradise’s DI Jack Mooney for three series between 2017 and 2020. However, after three years on the show, the Irish comedian revealed in 2019 that he would be saying goodbye to his role, and now he has addressed his exit. In an interview with Radio Times, the actor revealed that he chose to exit the show so that he could concentrate more on his stand-up work in addition to spending more time with his family, given that filming for the show took place in the Caribbean.

“I suppose I didn’t think I’d be doing anything for a fourth series,” he said. “I really thought three series would be the max, you know. Because it’s quite a demanding show… it’s a tough old show in terms of being away from home for so long, and in terms of the conditions that you film in – the heat and the humidity.” Despite the challenging conditions, Ardal said that his time on the show was “really amazing”. The TV personality, who shares three children, Emily, Rebecca, and Red, with his wife Melanie, added that it “made sense” to step back due to his family too.

“I think she [Melanie] found it very tough, because we’ve got three big grown-up kids living in the house and she’s got a lot on her plate, so I think she was finding it tougher as the years went on,” he said. “And I was missing them all hugely as well, so I think it made sense.” Following the announcement of his exit from the beloved series, it was confirmed that Ralf Little, 44, would be stepping into the role as Detective Inspector Neville Parker on Death in Paradise. The actor was over the moon about joining the BBC show, saying it took him “less than 0.0005 seconds” to accept the part, reports the Express.

Tim Key, the executive producer, spilled some details on how DI Parker would bring a fresh dynamic to the show, contrasting with his predecessor. He told the press: “I think with Ardal’s character, you had somebody who liked being there, and Neville’s character does not like being there. “He wants to be able to like being there, but kind of can’t. So it gives him a tension and a challenge right from the beginning that’s different to what we’ve just had with Ardal.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
