The popular ITV1 reality show, set to make a comeback towards the tail end of 2024, is giving the political landscape a miss this time around. Past seasons have seen Nigel Farage taking to the small screen before getting back to politics for Reform UK and former health minister Matt Hancock battling it out in the Australian jungle after rising to prominence during the Covid-19 pandemic. But rumour has it that producers have gathered how viewers feel tired of politicians popping up in their favourite reality series. “They’re not doing politicians this year. It’s been a heightened year for everyone when it comes to politics, what with the General Election,” a source claimed to The Daily Star.

Adding further fuel to the speculation, the source went on: “People have definitely had enough of seeing them on their screens.” It’s not just notorious names like Nigel and Matt who have dipped their toe in the reality pool, but the show’s past contenders include former Labour MP Lembit Opik in 2008, followed by ex-Tory MPs Nadine Dorries and Edwina Currie in 2012 and 2014. Back in February, whispers were already circulating about ITV bosses contemplating a politician ban from the show, as hosts Ant and Dec apparently fancied a change of pace.
A source told the Daily Mirror at the time: “In the past it’s been really interesting to see which politicians are willing to join the show, with some even serving MPs. However, keeping the impending election in mind, it seems like ITV feels that now isn’t quite the perfect moment for them. They concluded: “It’s time for something different so it’s fair to say no one is seeking any controversial figures from the world of politics at this stage.” Nigel Farage was reportedly paid £1.5 million to appear in the last series. And on his exit, Sam Thompson – who ended up King of the Jungle, reacted to the pay day.

Sam told The Times: “Mate, I would have done it for anything! It would have been a very, very easy negotiation. I would have paid them to be on it. It wasn’t monetary, or a career move, I genuinely wanted to go and eat camel’s penis. I wanted to meet Ant [McPartlin] and Dec [Donnelly], they’re my heroes, the most iconic people of my life.” The line-up for the upcoming series has not yet been revealed, but Coronation Street’s Alan Halsall is rumoured to be heading into the jungle.
