Privacy NoticeHer Love Island experience was far from easy. Jess White was pulled into a tense love triangle over Ronnie Vint from the start, before finally finding her man Hugo Godfroy in Casa Amor – only for him to express doubts over their connection. With Jess and Hugo now out of the villa, it may come as a surprise to fans of the ITV2 show that they’re still going strong – despite Hugo’s wobble just days before their exit. “We are still seeing each other,” the 25-year-old retail manager tells Deputy TV Editor Lauren Morris for OK!’s Love Island Dumping Debrief, while Hugo adds: “We’re just going at our own pace.” Before the pair were dumped after receiving the fewest votes from the public, Southampton electrician Hugo, 24, confided in fellow Islander Ayo Odukoya that he felt something was “missing” from their romance and that their conversations were “a bit dry”. Jess reveals that the pair worked out their problems – but it wasn’t shown on camera. “We actually had numerous conversations after Hugo’s chat with Ayo and we were good. That’s why I’m not feeling a certain way about it – because I’d moved on from it. I was aware of it but obviously, when it’s not shown, you have to come out and answer a lot of questions.

Love Island’s Maya Jama fashion ban exposed by axed stars – as they spill villa secrets and unaired Hideaway rules
“Me and Hugo spent so much time together, but that didn’t get aired,” she adds. “Let’s all remember it’s a TV show – we’re asked to have certain conversations, which are going to potentially cause drama, so when you start saying, ‘Actually, I’m happy doing what I’m doing with the person I’m coupled up with,’ it doesn’t make for good TV.” What did make the final edit were Jess’s heated arguments with other Islanders – and the Stockport-based babe clashed the most with Harriet Blackmore, who she was competing with for Ronnie at the start. Harriett and Jess’s fire-pit fights led some viewers to label Jess a “bully” – with Love Island being hit by 475 Ofcom complaints, most over their arguments. However, Jess reveals that the duo did share some more positive moments.
Jess and Harriett frequently clashed on the ITV2 show
“Me and Harriett actually had some amazing times together, which weren’t shown because every series there’s a triangle of some sort and the girls are going at each other,” Jess says. “We both gave as good as we got – but the difference is I am quite strong, things don’t tend to upset me. It’s a shame that’s the way it was portrayed but it doesn’t take away from the wonderful times.” She added: “With the whole Ofcom thing, if something bad was happening and I was not behaving the way I should, I wouldn’t have been allowed on that TV show. I wouldn’t have been allowed to stay in. “You only see 45 minutes of 24 hours.” Jess hasn’t been in touch with Harriett – who was dumped from the show ahead of Casa Amor – since leaving the villa. “On the outside, I probably wouldn’t be friends with her. You don’t always get on with everyone in life, and that’s the way it is.”
Jess and Hugo were one of the latest couples to be dumped from Love Island 2024
While Jess’s romance with Ronnie didn’t work out, she found love in Casa Amor with Hugo – who reveals that the Casa Amor bombshells had a stricter baggage allowance. “In Casa, we got one suitcase. I took two out to Majorca with me and [the producers] told me to put all my favourite clothes in one suitcase,” he says. “We got both of our cases once we went into the main villa.” He added that half of the clothes he took into Casa Amor “strobed” on camera – when studio lights flicker when pointed at a pattern-heavy material – a problem that Jess also suffered with. “It was a nightmare,” she sighs. “We had no clothes, 90% of our stuff strobed to the point where we said, ‘eBay – can you find us clothes?’ “We were told by the voice of God [the producers] that we needed our own fashion – but we had nothing. We all just re-wore the same outfits.” Jess adds that they were also banned from wearing certain outfits if host Maya Jama was wearing something similar. “The night of the Casa recoupling, Maya was wearing red. Emma [Milton] and Mimii [Ngulube] wanted to wear red but they couldn’t. They thought it might be a strobing situation but we now know it’s because Maya was wearing red. Another night, we weren’t allowed to wear black and that’s when she came in wearing black.

“Obviously, the moment is all about Maya so we need to make sure she’s looking her best. If you’re told you can’t wear red for anybody, it’s got to be for her because she’s so stunning.” There were some who weren’t afraid to break the villa rules however – mainly Joey Essex during meal times, when the boys and girls weren’t kept separate off-camera. “Joey just doesn’t understand when you say, ‘Boys and girls separate,’ he’s so like this with Jessie,” says Jess, as she puts her hands on Hugo to imitate Joey. “It’s like, ‘Joey – separate! That means separate!’ He just ignores them.” Hugo adds: “You’re not allowed to have island chat when you’re having lunch but it’s all we know! You just want to talk about it but constantly on the tannoy, it would be like, ‘Hugo, shut up!'” Jess continues: “They’re like, ‘Stop talking! Stop talking or we’ll separate you!’ It’s quite scary being told off.” As for who Jess and Hugo want to see win the 2024 series, they admit that they’re team Ciaran Davies and Nicole Samuel. “Their connection is very genuine – everyone can see that, even on the outside,” Hugo says. “They’ve got to win it!” Jess adds: “Going on connection, it would be Ciaran and Nicole. They’ve grown together and on their own, and it’s been really nice to see.” Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
