Privacy NoticeThis article contains spoilers for Monday’s EastEnders episode (22nd July 2024), currently available on BBC iPlayer. EastEnders ‘ Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) has been a man with the world on his shoulders as he spirals into debt, but it appears his problems have become a lot trickier. The accountant has fallen behind with payments for the care of his wife Debbie who remains in a coma following a stroke. Reiss also stole his wife’s savings to fund IVF treatment for his girlfriend Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy). But during the latest trip to Walford, Debbie’s care home called Reiss to chase up payments as he tried to buy more time to find the cash. Meanwhile, Sonia confided in long-term friend Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) and explained she was “terrified” that she will get a negative pregnancy test following her treatment. Kathy encouraged Sonia to find out if her IVF had worked and to do a pregnancy test. Across the Square, Reiss paid Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) a visit and lied that she had some outstanding bills to pay, reports the Daily Star.

Reiss even blamed Sharon forgetting about the payments due to Keanu Taylor (Danny Taylor) dying. Sharon told Reiss how her former partner Keanu liked him which is why she trusted him with her business accounts. Reiss backtracked, offering to find a loop hole instead to paying the bill upfront. He then went to see Debbie, confessing his guilt over his behaviour and the mess he had got himself into, made worse by scamming Sharon and lying to Sonia. The book-keeper confessed to Debbie about his sleepless nights and inability to face Sonia. He also revealed that the proceeds from their marital home sale had depleted, leaving him unable to cover her care fees. Upon returning home, Sonia shared the exciting news of her pregnancy, momentarily lifting Reiss’s stress as they basked in their shared happiness. However, as his problems resurfaced, Reiss left Sonia feeling deflated and upset when he downplayed their chances of a successful pregnancy.

In an effort to reconcile with Sonia, he admitted the extent of his debt to the care home and the looming threat of Debbie being moved out. Sonia was distressed by Reiss’s continuous lies and worried about affording a baby amidst their escalating debt. In a bid to rectify things, Reiss went back to Sharon’s and confessed there was no way to evade the tax bill. He urged Sharon to transfer £13,500 into the business account as she agreed to gather the funds.
