Privacy NoticeNicola McLean has bravely opened up about her struggle with weight-loss injections, revealing that she lied about her weight to obtain them, which resulted in her becoming seriously ill. Nicola joins the likes of Stephen Fry and Holly Hagan in speaking out against these controversial treatments and their misleading promotion. The 42 year old former glamour model shared her long-standing battle with eating disorders and body image issues, admitting that she falsified her BMI to purchase weight loss injections, originally intended for type 2 diabetes patients. Nicola is sharing her story to raise awareness about the potential dangers of these treatments and to caution others against seeking a “quick fix” often promised in deceptive social media ads.

She described how alarmingly “simple and easy” it was to get the medication. The I’m A Celebrity star, who has battled anorexia and bulimia since she was 11 and was later diagnosed with body dysmorphia, explained how she discovered the injections on Instagram and believed they were the “answer to all her prayers”. Chatting with The Sun, Nicola revealed: “It’s advertised like it’s going to perform miracles,” and shared the details of how she was influenced by social media to try the treatment. Despite being a slim size 10, she admitted to an online nurse that she was heavier to ensure approval for the drugs. Nicola confessed: “So I lied about my weight, gave my normal height of 5ft 4in, my blood pressure, paid £250 for a month’s worth and within a couple of days it arrived.” But the “miracle” jab, which she self-administered daily, quickly became a horror story as it made her “violently sick” after just one week. Yet, as the mother of two – who shares sons Rocky, 17, and Striker, 13, with her footballer husband Tom Williams – began shedding pounds, she felt unable to stop the injections.

Ignoring her worsening symptoms and her husband’s concerns that the medication was to blame, Nicola said: “I was obviously in denial. My weight was more important to me.” Her health deteriorated as she continued to be sick each morning, having nothing in her stomach to vomit. In the end, it was Tom who intervened, disposing of the harmful treatment. Nicola is on a mission to raise awareness about the potential dangers of weight loss injections, which are becoming more readily available. She’s also advocating for more funding towards mental health and eating disorder services. Reflecting on her own experience, she confessed: “I thought this was the answer to all my prayers, but it was a big mistake. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.” For help and support with eating disorders, you can reach out to Beat Eating Disorders at 0808 801 0677.
