Privacy NoticeCasualty has seen more than its fair share of on-screen disasters over the years – which you might expect, considering the popular BBC medical drama has been running for an incredible 38 years. But while the medics of Holby battle to save lives in the busy accident and emergency department each week, the show – launched way back in 1986 – has also seen considerable tragedy off screen too. Actor Simon MacCorkindale joined the cast in 2002 and played the character of Dr Harry Harper for seven years, but sadly died aged 58 after a four-year battle with cancer. Meanwhile, Rebekah Gibbs, who played paramedic Nina Farr for more than 100 episodes from 2006 passed away from breast cancer aged 41 in 2014, and the actor who starred as original hospital porter Kuba Trzincski from 1986, Christopher Rozycki, died after an accidental fall in 2015, aged 2015.

But life more than imitated art when a beloved crew member on the show was killed in a horror accident back in 1997. Thirty five year old David Coles sadly fell more than 40 metres from a light gantry when the platform toppled over on soft ground. He had been filming a road accident scene for the show near Abergavenny in Wales. David fell from the platform after being lifted up to adjust a lighting rig. As he reached the top, a timber pressure spread-plate under one of the gantry’s supporting legs split, toppling the machine and sending him to his death, Construction News reported at the time.

Raymond Judd of the Health and Safety Executive said that the ground was too soft to bear the weight of the platform. A verdict of unlawful killing was returned at the inquest. Last year, Casualty’s Charlie Fairhead star Derek Thompson opened up exclusively to OK! as he quit the show after nearly four decades. Speaking about whether he thought he would last that long on the drama, he said: “No, I never envisaged I’d stay 38 years. I originally signed up for three years, but it soon became apparent what a great character he was to play. Medicine and television have both changed a lot since I started. But the basics are still there – the reception area and desk where people roll up is still performing the same function it did on my first day.”Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
