The 31 year old actress joined the BBC drama as Stevie Nash back in 2021 and since then she has played a part in some gripping storylines. Meanwhile, Casualty’s original stars have gone on to varied careers since leaving the show. Born in Draperstown, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, she studied acting at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and gained recognition with the Peter Akerman Award for Best Comedy Actress. Aged three, Elinor was diagnosed with two heart ailments. Medical experts discovered that she suffered from a hole in her heart and anomalous pulmonary venous connection, a condition where the blood flows incorrectly to the heart.

She spent a significant part of her childhood hospitalised and underwent open-heart surgery aged seven at Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. Fortunately, after numerous medical reviews, she was declared healthy at age 21. Elinor candidly spoke about her previous health battles stating: “I was in and out of hospital loads as a kid so I’m au fait with things like cannulas. I remember that time vividly and you remember the level of care.”

She went on to praise the NHS, saying: “I remember being in the ambulance on the way to surgery and the amazing nurses – Hazel and Ann were my go-to nurses – and the fantastic Dr Craig and Dr Gladstone. Even at that age I was aware I was in good hands.” The actress, who’s now fighting fit, shared: “I’m all fixed now. I was checked every year until 21 and they fixed me good. That’s why shows like Casualty are so important. These people get to see us at our most vulnerable.” Off-screen, Elinor is blissfully wed to fellow actor Peter Basham. They welcomed their son, Joe, in 2016.

Peter isn’t a stranger to the spotlight either, having appeared in EastEnders as PC Anthony Rogers in 2019, and featuring in blockbusters such as Skyfall and Sherlock. He even shared the screen with Cillian Murphy in Inception, taking on the role of Jet Captain. Their son Joe was born prematurely, weighing just 2.2 kilograms, and had to stay in a special baby unit for 10 days. Elinor is immensely thankful for the NHS’s exceptional care for both her and her son, stating: “My little boy was in hospital for ten days and I saw how accomplished and adept the staff are. They looked after my little boy like a nest egg.” Expressing her deep respect for the health service, she added: “I have a huge amount of respect for the NHS and it’s an honour to get to create these amazing characters and tell these amazing stories. And for the last couple of years the NHS has been a tour de force.
