Privacy NoticeSlade’s Noddy Holder has shared an encouraging update after being diagnosed with cancer and given just six months to live. The former rocker, 77, has shared that he is doing well , thanks to experimental treatment for cancer that he was told would kill him. He has said that his cancer is “on an even keel” and that he’s responding well to an experimental treatment. The good news comes after he was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2017 and was given the devastating news it was terminal. But after quietly taking part in a clinical trial for an experimental treatment, Holder has surpassed the doctors’ expectations by five years. Holder says his condition was “touch and go” for a while when he was given the six month warning.

Chatting to BBC Radio 2, he said: “I lost all my hair. My weight was down to about eight stone.” But after the treatment he is still fighting the cancer today, years after he was given just months to live. Doctors suggested he take part in a clinical trial for a new type of chemotherapy, which hadn’t been tested on anyone over 60 before. Noddy kept his diagnosis a secret until recently, leaving fans shocked by the news. He says the treatment is working and “everything’s on an even keel. So I hope it carries on that way.”

Holder’s wife Suzan first revealed his cancer battle in an article for Great British Life in October. She said: “Five years ago we were given the devastating news that he had oesophageal cancer and only had six months to live. “We coped with it the only way we could, by hunkering down, sticking together and doing everything we could to survive it.” She added that there were no guarantees the treatment would work, but “here we are five years later and he’s feeling good and looking great.”

Esophageal cancer is known for being the sixth most common cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Most esophageal cancer symptoms aren’t obvious until the cancer is in an advanced stage, meaning it can be hard to treat. It starts when cells in the throat develop changes that make cells grow and divide out of control which can result in a tumour in the throat which can also spread to other parts of the body.
