Privacy NoticeIf you’re not a fan of doing high-intensity workouts that leave you dripping with sweat, you’re not alone – and why the latest fitness trend might be just right for you. Launched on TikTok, “cosy cardio” refers to doing low-impact exercise in the comfort of your own home. The movement aims to change the way we approach workouts, making them more fun. Celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston, Rochelle Humes and Rihanna have embraced the craze, opting to do yoga and Pilates some days instead of hitting the gym for high-energy classes. And it seems like a pretty chilled way to get yourself in shape this winter, as we’ve spotted mood lighting, candles and comfy pyjamas all incorporated into people’s low-impact exercise routines. Kyle Risley, the founder of workout experts Lift Vault, says, “There are several benefits to this workout approach, particularly for those who don’t feel extremely confident or lack the motivation to physically go to the gym during the colder months.

“Users are even challenging themselves to complete a cosy cardio session every day for 30 days. This is sustainable, as common reasons to skip exercise such as time, weather or travel won’t impact a cosy cardio workout. This can be a particularly great solution for those who work in an office and are wanting to get home and get cosy and wind down, while still burning calories. If you are looking to substitute this kind of workout for a gym membership, it will save you money, too. “Consistently keeping your body active is so important. Along with weight loss, improved sleep and heart health, exercise can help reduce stress and anxiety levels, as it releases endorphins which boost your mood and improve overall mental health.” Embrace low-impact movements Experts urge fitness fans to opt for exercises that are gentle on the joints, so they can have the best cosy cardio experience. Think Pilates, yoga flows, or dance movements.

“These activities elevate your heart rate while minimising the risk of injury, making them sustainable in the long run,” says fitness expert and personal trainer Claudia Kwayosa. Focus on enjoyment, not calories The purpose of cosy cardio is to have fun and not to stress too much about weight loss. “Try and shift your mindset from burning calories to finding pleasure in exercise, which promotes a positive and sustainable relationship with fitness,” Claudia says. Create a ritual If you’re stressing that you’ve not been making time for yourself recently because school or work has been busy, then now’s the time. Claudia says, “Make your cosy cardio sessions a sacred time for self-care. Light a scented candle or prepare a special playlist. These small rituals enhance the overall experience and create a sense of anticipation for your workouts.”

Keep it simple It’s not necessary to splash the cash when it comes to cosy cardio. Just keep it simple and stick to what works for you. That means you can wear whatever you like and don’t have to buy new clothes. Caroline Idiens, a PT and exercise in midlife expert, says if you’re not in pyjamas, opt for loose and comfy clothes. “Have your slippers close by or a blanket ready to wrap yourself in when you finish. With all cosy cardio, it’s completely subjective. The aim is to enjoy what you do and how you go about doing it. So relax into movement this winter.” Plan your workouts around daybreak and nightfall Getting up at sunrise may not be for you now, but you might turn over a new leaf with cosy cardio. Or you may choose to exercise as the sun sets as, according to the experts, sunrise and sunset are two fantastic times of day to move your body. Caroline says, “Lay out your mat and grab a cup of tea before you start. If you’re partaking in cosy cardio at these times, keep or put on your jammies and put on a podcast or TV show to set the scene. Who knew exercise could be so enticing!” Caroline Idiens is a personal trainer and exercise in midlife expert. She is also the founder of online strength training platform, carolinescircuits.com.
