Privacy NoticeBBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty has rushed to the defense of Friday night’s Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony, despite the four-hour extravaganza drawing mixed reactions from viewers around the globe. Even a riveting performance by iconic singer Celine Dion atop the Eiffel Tower couldn’t sway everyone’s opinion about the ceremony. Team GB’s Olympic champions Tom Daley and Helen Glover made Britain proud as they carried our flag along the Seine in high spirits. However, some spectators weren’t impressed, branding the ceremony “the worst in history” following a string of gaffes, bizarre sequences, and an ill-timed rainfall. Speaking on his experience viewing the ceremony, her co-host Mike Bushell admitted he found it enjoyable but also sparked debate: “I was on a lot of group chats, and lots of different opinions. A lot of people thought it was a bit weird and disjointed in the end”, reports the Mirror.

BBC presenter slams Olympic opening ceremony after problems backstage – ‘It wasn’t my favourite’

Despite this, he gave credit where it’s due: “But there were some fabulous moments.” After hearing Mike’s lukewarm review, Naga presented a valid point, suggesting experiencing the event live would have provided a completely different perspective. She reasoned: “I think if you were there and part of the atmosphere it would have been very, very different. “And then just seeing it on television and being so many steps removed…” Ending on a positive note, Mike expressed his astonishment at one particular moment: “I still don’t know how they got that big floating balloon on fire and into the air. That was spectacular.” Charlie Stayt, their co-presenter, pointed out what was perhaps the biggest disappointment of the evening. “The reality check is the weather was dreadful!” he exclaimed.

“I feel when they envisaged those scenes unfolding it was not in those conditions.” Mike chimed in, clearly impressed: “But they carried on,” while Naga noted: “And the athletes looked so excited. “They properly bought into it, so the excitement of the games is still there.” Paris will have another chance to wow viewers with the traditional Olympics Closing Ceremony, which will wrap up the games on Sunday, August 11.
