Privacy NoticeThe Olympic Games have kicked off in Paris, with the French capital hosting an epic Opening Ceremony on Friday, 26 July. Sporting events begun the following morning, with many athletes hoping to take home a gold medal. The BBC’s coverage of Paris 2024 will be led by a number of faces, including Clare Balding and Gabby Logan, but they will face restrictions due to French employment laws. The hosts will not be able to present both morning and evening coverage for the BBC, according to the Telegraph. This is due to the country’s strict laws which state that workers must have a minimum of 11 hours rest between shifts. This means the same presenter will not be able to host morning and evening coverage, despite this usually being the case.

Broadcasters are reportedly concerned that employees could be prevented from working in Paris if these rules are not followed. Gabby, 51, has opened up about the restrictions, admitting it is “quite a change”. She said: “Because of the French working directive, we are not allowed to do the morning session and the evening session. They are really strict about it apparently. It’s not just a kind of box-ticking exercise. It’s quite a change for all of us because we are used to these really early sessions in the morning.” Gabby recently presented coverage of the World Indoor Championships, where she worked long days up until 11pm. At the Olympics, she will not be able to do this. Gabby added: “We are all having to work to those rules within the BBC. We know the French work to live. It just means we split the day up slightly differently.”

Fellow presenter Clare, who will front evening swimming events at Paris 2024, will also face restrictions to her working hours. Jeannette Kwakye is also part of the presenting team delivering coverage for the BBC and will be covering mornings. Hazel Irvine will take over during the afternoons, before the evening coverage is hosted by either Clare at the swimming or Gabby at the athletics. From 10.40pm, a highlights programme will air on BBC One, hosted by Mark Chapman and Isa Guha. A second Olympic channel is available on iPlayer, but the BBC are restricted to those two platforms due to the International Olympic Committee awarding media rights in Europe to Warner Bros. Discovery. The company own Eurosport and the streaming service Discovery+.
