Privacy NoticeStrictly’s Claudia Winkleman was unrecognisable in a throwback photo from 21 years ago, sporting long brown locks instead of her signature sharp fringe and smoky eyes. The telly favourite, who’ll be back hosting the 20th series of the BBC’s embattled dance competition later this year, is rarely seen without her iconic style, but the picture from 2003 shows how she looked back in the day. Swapping her usual bold style for a softer appearance, her hair was scooped away from her face, with toned-down makeup, including blue eye shadow and a touch of pink lip gloss. Throughout her Strictly and Traitors tenure, Claudia has maintained her dramatic dark ‘do, only briefly flirting with blonde highlights, a move she feels has been beneficial for her career on Strictly. The show has been embroiled in a misconduct scandal after a number of celebrities accused its pro dancers of inappropriate behaviour, leading to an apology by the BBC.
Claudia is also known for presenting The Traitors

At the Edinburgh TV Festival, Claudia spilled the beans on an odd rule she had to stick to after being hired by then-BBC controller Danny Cohen. Reflecting on her journey with Strictly, Claudia humbly said: “I don’t say this in a faux self-deprecating way. It is a machine. A steam engine. I’m not even a cog.” She recalled the moment she landed the role: “Danny Cohen gave me the job and phoned me up and said, ‘We’d love you to do it’, I said, ‘Thank you so much, that is such an honour’.” Claudia then revealed the peculiar instruction she was given by the BBC chief following her appointment to the glitzy dance show.

She told the Daily Mail: “He said ‘I’m just going to need a phone number from you’ and I was like, ‘Oh yeah, OK, which one? ‘ and he said, ‘Your hairdresser’s’.” The telly star continued: “I was like, ‘Bit weird, controller of BBC One’. Two days later, James, who does my hair, said, ‘This guy called Danny phoned up to complain about the length of your fringe’.” She added: “He (Danny) was like: ‘You can have this job but it’s just annoying, it’s down to your nose. You want to be on telly but you’re invisible’.” Away from work, Claudia – who has a ‘secret pact’ with co-presenter Tess Daly over Strictly – is married to film producer Kris Thykier. The pair tied the knot in 2000, surrounded by their nearest and dearest. Claudia and Kris share three children – Jake, Matilda, and Arthur.
