Although we cannot visit the pub or gallivant around at a party, we have all now accepted that summer 2021 is going to be where it’s at. And it is no coincidence that it will also be when this delicious new offering comes into existence.

Prosecco DOC Consortium have announced that they have been given the go ahead to start producing Prosecco DOC Rosé, AKA pink Prosecco. This fizzy goodness is allowed to be sold earliest 1 January, following the harvest, which means that next year could start with a pop of a new type of celebratory beverage. According to The Drinks Business, an industry magazine, new regulations mean that rosé Prosecco will have to be made with a Glera base and blended with 10% – 15% Pinot Nero, with just Extra Dry and Brut Nature being the two permitted styles.

The new bottles will have labels that are vintage dated and must have a minimum of 85% of the fruit coming from the stated vintage. While you may believe you have already enjoyed a glass of rosé Prosecco, this isn’t the case, it will have instead been rosé sparkling wine. This is because there are strict rules, just like with Champagne, on what can actually be called Prosecco. It has come from the Prosecco region in north east Italy, which is made up of nine provinces which lie in the Veneto and Friuli Venzia Giulia areas.

Bosco Viticultori will be one of the first wine producers to create a pink Prosecco, and they are hoping to release it by January. Speaking to The Drinks Business, Pablo Lasagni, Bosco’s managing director said: “We will be making pink Prosecco from the 2019 harvest, which will be bottled in December. “There is a temptation to get the wines ready in time for Christmas, but it’s better to take your time and make a quality product than rush it to market.” Cheers to that!
