Privacy NoticeThe individual who shared inappropriate images of children with disgraced presenter Huw Edwards has been identified as a 25 year old convicted paedophile. The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that Alex Williams, from Wales, pleaded guilty to possessing and distributing category A, B and C images, as well as possessing prohibited images of children. He received a suspended 12-month jail sentence at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on 15 March. An investigation into Huw Edwards was initiated after a phone examined by officers in an unrelated case revealed the broadcaster’s involvement in a WhatsApp conversation. South Wales Police discovered the disturbing chat in which father-of-five Huw participated. The TV newsreader, who has been out of the public eye since stepping down from his role on News at Ten on 5 July 2023, appeared in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 31 July. He pleaded guilty to three counts of making 41 indecent images of children. The BBC issued a statement this evening regarding Huw’s plea following his court appearance. Huw, who was arrested last November and charged last month, will next appear in court on 16 September. He was escorted by police officers and surrounded by photographers as he entered and left the court today. His expression remained unchanged throughout the brief hearing, which lasted less than half an hour. Sign up to OK!’s daily newsletter to get updates sent to your inbox for free

Philip Evans KC, defending the Welsh presenter in court today, stated: “There’s no suggestion in this case that Mr Edwards has… in the traditional sense of the word, created any image of any sort.” He further clarified that Huw “did not keep any images, did not send any to anyone else and did not and has not sought similar images from anywhere else.” Additionally, Mr Evans pointed out that the former broadcaster had been dealing with “both mental and physical” health issues. The defence counsel praised his client’s reputation, telling the judge that he “was not just of good character, but of exceptional character.”

Huw was seen nervously fidgeting as his bail conditions were read out to him after he pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children earlier today, reported The Mirror. After entering his pleas, Huw sat staring into the distance, with his head tilted slightly upwards and adjusted his tie as Ian Hope, prosecuting, laid out the case against him. Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring told him he would not be sentencing him on Wednesday. In the court-drawn image, Huw stood with a hand wrapped around his wrist while looking downcast. Westminster Magistrates’ Court was told Edwards’ offending had a starting point of 12 months in prison. Huw was formerly the main anchor for the coverage of the late Duke Of Edinburgh’s funeral on April 17, 2021 and he also presented a programme from Windsor Castle the night before the funeral, titled HRH The Duke of Edinburgh Remembered. He continued to grace our screens until July 2023, leading the corporation’s coverage of the late Queen’s platinum jubilee, her passing and her funeral, as well as the coronation of King Charles. He was only taken off air when allegations emerged that he had paid a minor for sexually explicit photos, an issue separate from Wednesday’s court hearing.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
