Privacy Notice Christmas day is fast approaching, and with that there are many things to look forward to such as spending time with family, possibly celebrating in church, opening presents and watching all the Christmas movies – exclusively Netflix originals if you’re anything like me. While we all have our own unique traditions, we probably all have a similar stance when it comes to the food. The stance is that it’s great and there’s never enough. On the big day itself the average UK adult consumes 5,373 calories of festive goodness. Firm favourites include chocolate for breakfast, cheese boards, Bailey’s, plenty of beige buffets that Gillian McKeith would have a field day over and of course Christmas dinner itself. Perhaps even a Yorkshire pudding filled with Mac and Cheese and Pigs in Blankets, or a Salmon martini is on the menu if your household is particularly adventurous.

Of course there’s absolutely no need to feel any guilt for enjoying ourselves at Christmas or any other time of the year. Fitness, wellness and nutrition guru Penny Weston says, “It’s important not to let guilt get in the way of you enjoying yourself over the festive period.” She continues, “If you don’t let yourself have any treats over the festive period you’ll feel miserable and deprived. It’s about moderation. “Don’t be hard on yourself if you do miss a workout one morning or eat the wrong things for a day. You’re only human!” Plus, there are “many nutritional benefits of a Christmas dinner, so don’t feel guilty about piling your plate up high.” You don’t need to tell us twice. “About eight Brussels sprouts counts as one of your five-a-day and they’re loaded with vitamin C. Cabbage is a good source of vitamin K, which can help build and maintain healthy bones. And cranberries contain plant compounds that have a protective antioxidant effect. “Turkey is loaded with potassium, protein and selenium, and can work well to boost your metabolism. If you opt for a nut roast, it’s a great source of nutrients, including vitamin E, magnesium and phosphorus, and is loaded with antioxidants.”
