Privacy NoticeWhen Easter comes around, seeing supermarket shelves full of chocolate eggs, hot cross buns and delicious chocolate bunnies is nothing out of the ordinary. This year however, Sainsbury’s has taken things one step further and has divided shoppers thanks to the release of an unusual Easter treat. Combining two of the season’s most iconic foods – cocoa and carrots – the supermarket giant is now selling chocolate flavoured houmous, much to the dismay of social media users. After the product was shared on popular Facebook page Food Finds UK, the snack was slated by fans who weren’t too sure about the out-of-the-box snack.

The image showed the on-the-go product, which is part of the company’s ‘Easter Bunny Snacks’ range. The snack features a number of carrot sticks alongside a pot of chocolate houmous to dip them in. Coming in at £1, the Easter treat is vegan, with the dip containing cooked chickpeas, golden syrup, sesame seed paste, cocoa powder and concentrated lemon juice. But commenting on the post, Facebook users were quick to share their thoughts – both good and bad.

“This may be the first food item I’ve ever seen that has actually made me boil with rage,” one wrote. Another added: “I’m a chef and creations like this is why my job is safe”. One shopper joked: “How have they made houmous… worse? That’s quite an achievement”. Elsewhere other social media fans were more on board with the new food trend.

“Love houmous so will have to try it!,” read one comment. “I think I’m the only person who finds this appealing can tell I’m pregnant,” someone else added. Continuing the debate on Twitter, one user wrote: “Why @sainsburys why? Carrot and chocolate flavoured houmous is absolutely VILE. Just stop it. Immediately.” As Good Friday falls on April 15 in the UK this year, and Easter Sunday and Easter Monday will fall on April 17 and 18, Sainsbury’s isn’t the only supermarket to begin to roll out its Easter range.
