Speaking to The Mirror, Emma, who plays Honey Mitchell, teased: “We just know Chris is going to have something very exciting planned as he always does. It is exciting. We’re all really proud we’re there and going to be a part of it.” Jamie, who plays Jay Brown, remained tight-lipped, joking: “But we don’t know what it is! I think it’s so under lock and key that we don’t even know if those in the know, know! It’s under lock and key!” The show’s boss, Chris Clenshaw, has hinted that the soap has been dropping subtle hints about potential returns, revealing: “The 40th has been in the works for quite some time. The nostalgic element means a lot.”

This has led to speculation about which iconic characters might make a comeback, especially after the recent announcements about Chrissie Watts and David Wicks returning this year. EastEnders’ Matt Di Angelo, who plays Dean Wicks, has spilled on “big surprises” ahead, leaving fans on the edge of their seats. Chatting with The Mirror at the Radio Times Soap Awards, he dished some details about the soap’s 40th-anniversary celebrations: “I know quite a lot and I can’t tell you who exactly – but when I found out, I was very surprised that they would come back.” Meanwhile, EastEnders’ executive producer Chris the man behind the monumental returns of Cindy and Ian Beale, opened up about bringing back iconic characters: “It’s not just because of the lovely reaction. It all depends on the story and where the characters are. As we head towards our 40th year, it is the history of the show. I think the nostalgic element means a lot. But it has to come from character, it has to come from story.”

This comes after EastEnders star Max Bowden revealed the reason he left the BBC soap, confessing he was struggling with the tough filming commitments. In December last year, it was confirmed that the actor was leaving the role after more more than four years. Max had faced a number of tough storylines, including filming gut-wrenching scenes with Danielle Harold, whose character Lola Pearce died from a brain tumour.

The 29-year-old actor – who played Ben Mitchell, the son of Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) and Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) between 2019 and 2024 until his character got imprisoned in America – has now confessed that he opted to say goodbye to the BBC soap opera because he was “very tired” after doing covering emotionally gruelling stories over “nearly 600 episodes.” Opening up about calling it quits on the The Lewis Nicholls Show, Max said: “The important thing was my time was ready.
