Privacy NoticeWe’re all living through a historic event – King Charles III and Queen Camilla will be officially crowned on 6th May. Few people are letting the day go by without a bit of a fuss – on top of street parties, later pub opening times, and Charles and Camilla’s faces appearing on tea towels, quite a few food and drink products have enjoyed a limited edition regal makeover. Just as Christmas food tends to consist of pigs in blanket-themed grub (I tried it all here), Coronation edibles tend to feature Coronation chicken and crowns – makes sense. Having made it my mission to sample some of the goodies on offer, here are my verdicts… M&S King coronation club sandwich, £4.50

The coronation club sandwich was my first attempt at expanding my tastebuds

Royal fans fury after ‘winning’ Coronation Concert tickets – but none are left

Rating: 7/10 I’ve got to admit that the aesthetics of coronation chicken kind of gives me the ick. So I knew if I was going to survive this taste test then I needed to get over that issue pronto. Things temporarily worrying when I thought I spotted some beetroot – my food nemesis – poking out between the slices of bread, but luckily it was just red onion. PHEW! There was also cucumber, salad leaves and a lot of bread – all foods I’m more than comfortable with. I decided the best thing to do was to close my eyes and take a bite in order to put my fear to one side and give this sarnie a fair rating. The method worked and I chomped my way through. It was tasty, and the sweetness mixed with the savoury was an enjoyable combination. Plus, by the end I felt like I’d slightly overcome my coronation chicken fear. Not sure it would beat my classic BLT but it was a nice change. Also, very filling – the extra piece of bread will do that. Aldi Coronation chicken crowns, £2.99 Rating: 8/10

Aldi’s breaded chicken crowns add a bit of sophistication to a classic chicken and chips dinner
(Image: Aldi)

As someone with a love heart tattoo, I really appreciate any commitment to super basic emoji style shapes. The crown shape is very clear, so it definitely brings a bit of royal glamour to the classic chicken and chips dinner. The meat was a nice quality, and the breadcrumb coating wasn’t too heavy – I wouldn’t be disappointed if it was given to me at McDonald’s or KFC, which I think is very high praise. M&S King of everything milk chocolate crowns, £3

Chocolate in the shape of a crown? Yes, yes, yes

Rating: 7/10 This is solid milk chocolate in the shape of a crown – you can’t really go wrong. I would put these out as part of a Coronation buffet and advise people not to eat until I’d got my shot for Instagram. A dairy milk bar would be just as tasty, and less costly but maybe this is worth it for the likes. Aldi Coronation pizza, £4.29 Rating: 8/10

Why not watch King Charles’ coronation while tucking into a limited edition pizza? Sounds ideal to us…

Okay, my tastebuds are kind of getting acclimated to all things Coronation now. I didn’t have to psych myself up to take a bite and instead got stuck in straight away. The pizza was also complemented with spring onions and tomatoes, a sourdough base and stringy cheese. I can see myself eating this while watching the procession, and critiquing the royals’ outfit choices. M&S Coronation Colin the Caterpillar, £10

Colin has been given a regal makeover
(Image: M&S)

Rating: 10/10 You cannot beat Colin the Caterpillar. He’s been served up for office birthdays and family shindigs since time began (actually 1990 was when he arrived onto the scene but it feels like forever, in a good way). Many have tried to copy *we’re looking at you Aldi* but nobody does it like the OG. Now Colin has been given a regal makeover. He’s retained the details we know and love – a long chocolate sponge roll filled with chocolate buttercream, covered in milk chocolate with a decorated white chocolate face – but he’s got some new additions, namely that his back is covered in white chocolate crowns and diamonds. You don’t need me to tell you how tasty this limited edition cake is. It was so good I went back for seconds, and thirds then realised why it’s probably best you don’t tackle a celebration cake alone, the result being I felt rather queasy. M&S Honey mustard giant sausage roll, £10 Rating: 8/10

The honey mustard sausage roll even had bacon in the pastry

Honey mustard has the same initials as His Majesty. This news is almost as exciting as the day I realised that I (Josie Copson) had the same initials as Juicy Couture. M&S have run with this fact (as I did by purchasing three velour tracksuits), and I personally appreciate the break from coronation chicken. Honey mustard reminds me of being on holiday in the USA, and as I can’t afford to do that very often (as I spent my savings on tracksuits) it was nice to have this little taster. The pastry was crumbly, and it also had pieces of bacon in it which was a pleasantly surprising addition. Tyrrells Coronation Chicken hand-cooked English crisps, £2.75 Rating: 8/10

Coronation chicken is really working overtime
(Image: Tyrrells)

As a former vegetarian, I know that a lot of meat flavoured crisps don’t actually contain meat, so I was ready to serve these up to a veggie pal. Thankfully I decided to double check the ingredients list to discover Tyrells have gone legit on this one. Once again the trusty coronation chicken has been brought out to celebrate the King. Nobody is more booked and busy than this flavour. If I was blindfolded I’m not sure I would have got that this was the intention. The crisp was giving me more roast chicken vibes, but it didn’t stop me from making my way through the sharing bag. My only other note is why aren’t the crisps in the shape of crowns? Aldi King’s Coronation Cupcakes, 6 for £2.59 Rating: 8/10

“Let them eat cake” was said by a French royal at some point in the 18th century, so it makes sense to have some of the sweet treat in Charles’ honour. The paper casing is in a union jack print, and the icing is blue and white, with a few flags for decoration. They definitely nailed the patriotic brief. If you’re hosting an event and would rather spend your time outside of the kitchen then these would be the perfect cheat. They are tasty enough to be impressive, but not too fancy that they’re no longer passable as your own creations! M&S Coronation ale, £3 Rating: 8/10

M&S’ coronation ale isn’t too heavy – ideal if, like me, you’re not a big ale drinker

As someone who only started drinking beer in January I’ve not got huge amounts of experience. Let me try not to embarrass myself. Okay, so it’s a really nice orange colour. I think I failed already. It isn’t too heavy, and has a nice sweet after taste. The ingredients used are all from British farms, which is a nice touch. HECK Coronation Chicken Sausages, £3.20 Rating: 9/10

HECK’s coronation chicken sausages are bursting with flavour

Whether it’s a classic pork sausage or a fancier veggie option, my years on this earth have taught me one thing: sausages are superior to bacon. And while I’m aware that I’m making a very big claim, one of which often leads to debates to break out when I’m bold enough to declare it over breakfast, HECK’s Coronation Chicken Sausages didn’t let me down on this one. With their mild curry spice and small flecks of raisins, the limited edition sausages were all I wanted them to be and more. Chicken curry flavour but in sausage form? I’m in. Iceland Coronation Chicken Pies, £2.75 Rating: 7/10

Iceland’s Coronation Chicken Pies are a great alternative to the coronation quiche

When it comes to eating pies, I take things very seriously. If Great British Bake Off has taught me anything it’s that pastry must be flaky, able to melt in the mouth and, most importantly, there must be no soggy bottoms. So, you can imagine my excitement when I rushed to take my Iceland Coronation Chicken Pies out of the oven to discover that they were crispy and golden. In fact, I nearly gave myself a Hollywood handshake. Inside, the filling has a distinct sweetness (thanks to some mango chutney) while the chicken is lovely and tender. This year may be all about the coronation quiche, but the coronation pie is a refreshing alternative.
