Privacy NoticeAntiques Roadshow delivered another emotional rollercoaster as a guest presented a collection boasting deep military history, including rare SAS memorabilia once belonging to his father. The BBC favourite was stationed in Dundee for the repeated episode where expert Mark Smith couldn’t hide his excitement upon examining the incredible assortment of medals, badges and paperwork. He eagerly told the story, saying: “You said to me this morning ‘my dad was a soldier’ then you started to get this stuff out and I got so excited because this man was in the SAS, this is fantastic.” The proud son detailed his dad, David Cargill’s wartime heroics, displaying a snap of him before joining the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in France.

Mark, dissecting the fascinating haul, noted: “We have a Territorial medal here. He went to France and he starts off his war by coming off a beach, somewhere called Dunkirk because he has the Dunkirk medal as well. What did he join then? “, reports the Express. To which the guest responded with his fathers impressive transition, “He joined the Parachute Regiment, did his training and once he’d got his wings, he immediately volunteered for SAS and was accepted.” Amidst the treasured items was his dads certificate, made even more significant due to the signature of famed SAS officer Paddy Mayne. Highlighting the rarity of genuine pieces, Mark expressed: “Now, when you see these badges and things that you have here and you see SAS wings, usually they are fake. You have a Kings Crown Parachute Regiment badge. Even they today are hard to find and usually they are copied as well.”

“You then have two of the shoulder titles for the 1st SAS. Now, I’m not certain that I’ve ever seen those before, in the flesh to actually touch them but there they are.” Pointing at his father’s beret, the Antiques Roadshow expert was clearly impressed by the authentic details it featured, including the little badge which he mentioned is widely “faked all across the world”. The guest then presented a photograph depicting his father driving an SAS jeep, leading Mark to acknowledge how uncommon it is to see such personal action shots. The expert couldn’t hide his excitement as he remarked: “These things just don’t come on the market, so to actually be able to stand here and touch the real thing, it’s fantastic!”

When assessing the value, the Antiques Roadshow star estimated the medals to be worth around £200 alone. But considering the collection in its entirety, Mark suggested: “I think you’re actually looking somewhere close to £8,000.” The crowd let out a collective gasp upon hearing the valuation, and the owner expressed his disbelief, saying his father would be very taken aback by this. Mark wrapped up the appraisal by thanking the guest for showing “absolutely fantastic” items.
