Privacy NoticeA conman posed as a celebrity auctioneer in his attempt to rob a bank, but was foiled by sharp-witted staff. Back in 2014, the man – who can’t be named for legal reasons – walked into a UK branch of a popular bank claiming to be Charles Hanson, one of the stars of the hit BBC TV show Bargain Hunt, in his attempt to steal £3,000. Workers in the bank were suspicious of the man and gathered the fingerprint evidence police needed to convict him. The court heard that although the driving licence included the TV star’s details, it used a photo of the conman and was described as an excellent forgery.

When the man asked for £3,000, the cashier became suspicious and asked him to fill in a withdrawal form, before alerting her manager. The conman then made his excuses and left the branch. Police were later able to use fingerprints to identify the culprit. Charles Hanson, 46, is himself facing trial next year, after he was accused of assault and coercive behaviour. Police were called to a domestic incident in June at the £1.5million family home in Derbyshire that Charles had shared with his wife Rebecca Ludlam and their two children since 2014. Charles, who has also appeared on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow, was charged with seven offences, which include two of assault causing actual bodily harm, and one of controlling and coercive behaviour, as well as two counts of assault by beating.

He has since pleaded not guilty on all charges after appearing in court early this year. He was released on bail on the condition that he does not return to the family or contact his wife. In a previous statement denying all charges, he said that he would be “co-operating fully with the investigation and legal process.” His statement, which was shared with the MailOnline, read: “I deny all the charges. I have never behaved aggressively or unlawfully towards my family. “We have been through some difficult times in our marriage and it is extremely sad that this has become a criminal matter. I will be co-operating fully with the investigation and legal process.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
