Privacy NoticeCelebrity Gogglebox star and comedian Chris McCausland has been confirmed as the first official celebrity to be taking part in Strictly Come Dancing’s new series. The comic, who is best known for his appearances on Have I Got News for You and Would I Lie To You, is set to be one of the first blind celebrities to take part on the show. Chris, 47, appeared on This Morning to announce the news, revealing that him taking part was “the worst kept secret” as he was heavily rumoured to be in the line-up. In a statement, Chris said that he has never danced before. “If anybody out there is thinking – How the hell is he going to do that? – then rest assured that I am thinking exactly the same thing,” he said. “I don’t dance, I haven’t danced, I can’t dance, I can’t see the dancing I will have to do. What can possibly go wrong? Ok don’t answer that…!”

Back in June, Chris was rumoured to be the first blind contestant on Strictly Come Dancing with BBC bosses reportedly “delighted” by the signing and hoping to “showcase disability on TV”. Chris was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, which caused him to lose his sight completely at 22 years old. Speaking about becoming blind, he previously described the time as “scary and embarrassing”. He added: “I got myself into bad situations because I didn’t want to ask for help. I will never be on a level playing field with everyone else.” Chris regularly appears on Celebrity Gogglebox with comedian Donna Preston and currently hosts his own Saturday morning chat show for ITV – The Chris McCausland Show. The comic lives with his partner Patricia and their young daughter Sophie.

While Chris is the first celebrity to be confirmed for Strictly, Olympic swimmer Tom Dean revealed last week that he would be doing the BBC show, following in the footsteps of fellow athlete Adam Peaty. He said: “Naturally you want to take a break after you’ve had a full Olympic cycle and the opportunity arose. “I thought it would be really exciting to try something a bit different. I’ll be doing that and straight back into training after it. It’s something to look forward to.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
