Privacy NoticeA British mum-of-four has shared her harrowing experience after a surgery in Turkey went disastrously wrong, leaving her in excruciating pain and fearing for her life. Sara Platt, 33, who had lost an impressive 12 stone, travelled to Turkey for a cosmetic procedure to remove excess skin, alongside a breast lift and implants. However, the dream of relaxing by the pool quickly turned into a nightmare as she woke up to intense agony and a horrifying discovery that her breast had turned ‘totally purple’. Speaking to ITV News, the South Wales mum described the moment she was in so much pain she begged her father to tell the nurses to end her life. The ordeal didn’t stop there; nine days post-operation, while still feeling extremely unwell, Sara witnessed more horror when her husband helped her change bandages, only to find brown liquid oozing from her wounds.

Sara recounted the terrifying incident: “As he was undoing it, all this brown liquid started seeping out of my body. I screamed. I felt like I was falling apart. It was like, oh my god, my insides are going to come out. It’s not a health holiday. They told me I’d be sitting by the pool within three days. I was rotting in a hotel room.” Sara’s surgery took a disastrous turn when infection set in, prompting the Turkish surgeon to perform a second operation in a facility that resembled a beauty clinic more than a hospital. With only local anaesthetic, Sara was left awake and aware as the surgeon worked on her stomach wound, reports the Mirror. She vividly remembers the horrific experience: “He was handed a burning tool. And he started burning me. And that, that will, for the rest of my life, haunt me every day, every night. That ruined my life, that did. I could hear the sizzling in my skin, I felt like I was on fire.” Contrary to the Turkish cosmetic agency’s claims that the operation was successful and that Sara simply didn’t rest enough afterwards, a hospital document signed by the doctor revealed that the surgery “did not go to plan”. The document highlighted “circulation issues” and the need for further surgery to remove excess fatty tissue from her stomach and back, which had been left behind during the initial operation. It even noted that the accumulation of fatty tissue on her back had caused a noticeable hump. After being cleared with a fit-to-fly cert, Sara dashed back to A&E upon arrival home and met with Consultant Plastic Surgeon Prof Iain Whitaker.

He revealed the dire straits Sara was in: “Sara’s was a devastating case with significant infection, lots of tissue that was dead. It was life-threatening, if there’d been a delay in hospital admission or transfer, then there definitely would have been a chance of mortality.” Post-trauma, Sara’s endured nine surgeries to mend her body and holds on to her life with gratitude, although she’s had to bid farewell to her right breast and live with intense scarring. This includes a hefty skin graft 8cm by 11cm on her belly, fusing to the muscle beneath and hindering her moves. On the August 14, Sara braved her 10th corrective op to remove the problematic graft, and lucky for her, Prof Whitaker worked his magic to bridge the gap and bind the skin, aiming to dampen her pain and gift her more flexibility. Looking ahead, Sara is keen to warn folks about the perils of seeking cosmetic touch-ups abroad.

Meanwhile, the cosmetic agency linked to the ordeal previously swatted away Mrs Platt’s accusations, claiming it merely played intermediary, connecting her with medics. The spokesperson commented: “We are saddened to hear that Mrs Platt is holding us responsible for all the issues, but the truth is much different than what she portrays.” “We get all the necessary and legally mandated documents, approvals, and consent forms from her and enlighten her about all the processes prior to performing any procedures. Also, we would like to inform you that we are only the agents in this matter. We are not a hospital or doctor in this matter. Our entity only mediates between the health entity and the patient.”
