The first month of the year welcomes the annual challenge of Veganuary, which encourages people to follow a plant-based diet throughout January. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that I love meat, it’s an addition to almost every lunch and dinner I consume, but my curiosity about Veganuary caught the better of me. Will vegan products taste nice and are dishes easy to find when eating out? The answer is yes.

Eating out is one of my key sociable settings and in an attempt to try some vegan meals, I visited my local Wagamama’s as a brand new main has been added to their already appealing menu. Let me introduce you to their new lion’s mane ‘steak’ bulgogi. This dish is made up of udon noodles cooked with aubergine and caramelised onion in a sweet and salty amai miso sauce, topped with smoky lion’s mane mushroom. It’s drizzled with Korean barbecue sauce, sprinkled with sesame seeds and garnished with kimchee, spring onion, red chilli and coriander – I know, sounds good right? Putting my taste buds to the test, I tried my very first vegan meal and I was impressed. First of all, the dish came out exactly as it looked on the menu, which is always a bonus in my eyes.

It provided a generous portion of noodles and the smoky lion’s mane mushroom, which looked so similar to steak that I could have easily forgotten it was vegan. The dish was full of flavour from the smokiness of the mushroom to the spiciness of the chilli and Wagamama’s signature umami taste – it kicked all the boxes. The lion’s mane mushroom was different to any type of fungi I’ve tried before with an enjoyable chewy texture and generous lengthy slices. It didn’t provide that soft and soggy texture you can sometimes get with other mushrooms, but instead had a meat-type feel to it. I can certainly see why they call it the “mighty mushroom” with Wagamama hoping to hit those steak cravings with this plant-based alternative. Did I enjoy the meal? Yes. Would I have it again? Absolutely!

Despite not taking on the full Veganuary challenge, it has opened my eyes to other plant-based alternatives without the fear of missing out on flavours you might find in a meat dish. The smokiness in the mushroom really works wonders in the dish and I found it a great way to get in some extra veggies too! The new lion’s mane ‘steak’ bulgogi has already proven to be a huge hit at the pan Asian restaurant and is part of their mind. body. bowl campaign. This sets out to help beat the ‘January blues’ by instead “celebrating the power of nourishing the whole human entity” and to encourage us to make “small, informed choices to our daily living” that can help us feel and live better.

Another addition to the Wagamama menu is their range of mindful drinks which is their take on non-alcoholic drinks – perfect to sip during dry January.
