Over the years, 58-year-old star has had a long career and an interesting personal life. Here’s what we know about his on and off-screen life and times. Born in Glenrothes in Fife, Scotland, Dougray appears to have got his performing from his dad, who was also an actor before opting for a more traditional career as a salesman. Dougray was raised as Stephen Scott, but opted to use his middle name when he discovered there was another actor named Stephen Scott.

After some success in the UK in TV series including military drama Solider Soldier and films including Twin Town, he got his big break when Tom Cruise picked him to play the villain in Mission Impossible 2. However, the role came at a price, as Dougray claims that Tom blocked his chance to take on what could have been the biggest role of his career – Wolverine in X-Men, the role later taken on by Hollywood star Hugh Jackman when Dougray was unable to commit. “That one was out of my control – Tom Cruise didn’t let me do it,” he explains. “We were doing Mission Impossible, and he was like, ‘you’ve got to stay and finish the film’, and I said ‘I will, but I’ll go and do that as well’. For whatever reason he said I couldn’t. He was a very powerful guy. Other people were doing everything to make it work.” Another role Dougray missed out on was Jame Bond, despite being heavily rumoured to take over from Pierce Brosnan. “They certainly approached me, but at the end of the day all that matters is that Daniel Craig played Bond and he was great. I’m not sure if it was ever for me,” he told The Times in 2021. As well as his professional achievements, Dougray is father to three children. He has twins Eden and Gabriel with his first wife Sarah Trevis, who he married in 2000. Fellow Scottish actor Ewan McGregor served as the best man at the wedding.

The couple’s divorce in 2005 was very public, with claims that she had an affair and rumours about his relationship with Kate Winslet on the set of their film Enigma. There was embarrassment at the London premiere of the film when Dougray went to kiss his wife in front of photographers and she turned away, the kiss ending up on her chin. Dougray went on to marry actress Claire Forlani, who has starred in classic film Meet Joe Black and more recently TV series Camelot in Italy in 2007. They have a son, Milo Thomas Scott. “I feel so lucky to have met her,” he said of Claire after their engagement. “She’s an amazing actress and human being. I’m very happy.” Recent years have seen Dougray star in UK series including Vigil with Suranne Jones. He has been grateful to be back in Scotland in recent years to film Crime – which is based on the novels by Scottish write Irvine Welsh – as the star is an immensely proud Scotsman. Earlier this year Dougray led New York’s Tartan Day Parade, which celebrating Scottish culture. He followed in the footsteps of many famous Scots including Sir Billy Connolly, KT Tunstall, Sean Connery, Karen Gillan and Sam Heughan. “I think I’ve always strongly identified with being Scottish,” he told BBC Radio. “I think we have a great country.
