Privacy NoticeArrests have been made in connection with the death of Friends star Matthew Perry, who died of an overdose at his home in Los Angeles in October last year. Matthew was found dead in his swimming pool on 28 October 2023 and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office later attributed his death to the acute effects of the drug ketamine, which is a sedative used to treat depression, as well as used as a recreational drug. Police have reportedly arrested a doctor and ‘dealers’ over the case. The unnamed doctor and suspected drug dealers were arrested on Thursday 15 August but it is currently unclear whether they have been charged with any crimes. Matthew had been prescribed ketamine therapy for anxiety and depression, but it was reported at the time of his death that he had not had treatment for more than a week, meaning the ketamine found in his system after he drowned in his pool had not been prescribed. The actor, who died at the age of 54, had been open about his struggles with substance abuse and numerous stays in rehab. In 2022, he released his memoir, entitled Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, in which he wrote about being an alcoholic from the age of 14, and addicted to painkiller Vicodin following a jet ski accident in 1997. He openly spoke about how his addictions meant his weight fluctuated dramatically, which could be seen over the different seasons of his hit sitcom Friends. Matthew gained international stardom in Friends, alongside co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox and David Schwimmer. The sitcom ran for 10 years from 1994, and during that time Matthew also appeared in hit movies including The Whole Nine Yards with Bruce Willis in 2000, the romantic comedy Fools Rush In with Salma Hayek, and 17 Again with Zac Efron. After Friends, he starred in the acclaimed but short-lived series Studio 69 on the Sunset Strip in 2006, and guest starred in The West Wing and The Good Wife. He also appeared in the special Friends: The Reunion in 2021.

Following his death, the creators of Friends paid tribute to the actor. Show creators Marta Kauffman, David Crane and Kevin Bright expressed their deep sadness at his passing in a joint statement to Deadline. They said: “We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment not just to his work, but in life as well.” Marta, David and Kevin ended their joint statement with a nod to the way Friends’ episodes were titled. They said: “We send all of our love to his family and friends. This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.” Matthew is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles, opposite Warner Bros Studios, where Friends was filmed.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
