Privacy NoticeGMB’s Richard Madeley had to quickly say sorry to Coronation Street’s Jennie McAlpine during Monday’s show after getting his facts wrong just moments into their chat. Jennie, famed for her role as Fiz on the cobbles, was on Good Morning Britain to chat about her character’s latest drama, which involves the shock return of Tyrone’s ex Alina and their baby son. As they welcomed Jennie via video link, Richard mentioned she’d been on the show for 27 years, but a shocked Jennie corrected him on the spot. She informed Richard and co-host Kate Garraway that it’s actually been 23 years since she first walked into Weatherfield, prompting an immediate apology from Richard.

Richard quizzed: “I’m just going through the notes here, it’s extraordinary, you’ve been in Corrie now longer than Ena Sharples, Hilda Ogden, Elsie Tanner… does it feel 27 years?” Kate jumped in with a correction: “23 years! ” And Jennie responded: “23 yes, don’t age me that much Richard! ” Leading Richard to respond: “I apologise,” reports the Mirror. Jennie, who joined the soap as a teen and is now a mum-of-three, reflected: “23 years, yes 2001. I’ve been in it now longer than I wasn’t in it – I was 17 when I joined.” During her stint on Corrie, Jennie has been at the heart of many major plots, and her current storyline could spell further turmoil for Fiz. Following Tyrone’s affair with Alina, who left for Romania, a recent twist saw Fiz bump into her at a Weatherfield supermarket, only to learn she had a young son whom she claimed was Tyrone’s. Now, her hubby is eager to connect with his little lad.

In a candid chat, Richard quizzed the soap legend: “Do you have any input? You’ve been doing it for so long are you able to say maybe to a scriptwriter, ‘Fiz wouldn’t say that’ or Fiz wouldn’t do that’. Have you got some input and a bit of control over the character?” Jennie responded: “No and I don’t think I’d want to really because we have such a brilliant team and it’s massive. There’s researchers, storyliners and the actual script writers and producers. They come up with things, and have been coming up with things, for over 60 years and I think you just have to trust them. “Some things you think ‘don’t know’ maybe work better than you even thought they would, and some things you think will be brilliant but don’t go so well so I think you’ve got to trust them and that’s life of the cobbles. You never know what’s going to happen with your character.” GMB is on ITV weekdays at 6amStory SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
