Privacy NoticePhil Mitchell is one of EastEnders’ most legendary characters, with the local hardman having been an Albert Square resident for over three decades. Portrayed by actor Steve McFadden, the head of the Mitchell family has been at the centre of numerous hard-hitting storylines over the years. Steve, 65, landed the role in 1990 and joined the cast of the BBC One soap alongside fellow actor Ross Kemp, who played Phil’s younger brother Grant Mitchell. The pair became an iconic duo on-screen, but Ross eventually exited the soap. Steve has remained on EastEnders ever since he was cast, with Phil’s criminal schemes, numerous marriages and multiple children continuing to keep him at the centre of the drama in Walford.

Steve has been playing Phil for 34 years now, and has amassed a huge fortune in that time. The actor reportedly takes home a whopping £200,000 per year for his BBC soap role. Alongside acting, he’s also been involved in other TV projects. The star previously presented the Sky One game show Britain’s Hardest in 2004 and appeared in Kevin and Perry Go Large in 2000. After previously taking a break from EastEnders to focus on other projects in 2011, the dad-of-three landed a huge gig as Captain Hook in the Peter Pan panto at The Swan Theatre in London and made around £200,000 for a few weeks of work over the festive season. Thanks to EE and his other side projects, Steve is worth more than £2.8m, according to Celebrity Net Worth. This figure makes him one of soapland’s biggest earners, alongside the likes of Adam Woodyatt, Jack P. Shepherd and Bill Roache.

Despite Phil being an integral part of EastEnders, fans have wondered if the character is due to exit the BBC One soap in the near future. A series of episodes have began pointing towards Phil being lonely, with one scene even seeing him break down crying at home. He has been living alone since estranged wife Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) moved out with her three sons. Phil and Kat split after she found out he cheated on her with Emma (Patsy Kensit). Phil’s son Ben is currently in prison while his daughter Louise lives in Portugal with mum Lisa. Elsewhere, the rest of the Mitchells have grown tired of Phil and his angry outbursts. Following the arrival of Stevie Mitchell, plenty of drama kicked off between the family, mainly due to Phil’s dislike of Stevie.
