During a recent episode of the Newlyweds podcast with Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo, 41 year old Matt reminisced about how he’d whisked Emma away to Venice for a surprise birthday proposal. While on holiday, he’d planned on popping the question at an intimate restaurant setting, but plans took a sharp turn when he overheard English fans belting out Busted tunes nearby. As a result, he had to think fast and come up with an alternate way to propose.

“I hear someone singing a Busted song at one point, and I’m like this is going to go terribly wrong. I was like ‘right this isn’t going to work, so what do I do now?’,” he explained. Instead, Matt ended up taking Emma for a walk around Venice before making the big ask on the Rialto Bridge – a landmark that he didn’t initially recognise. But despite the romantic gesture, Emma, 48, known for presenting Big Brother, explained that she found the occasion utterly “mortifying” as they were surrounded by “loads of people around”.

“We walked to the top of it, and he just got all serious, and I’m like what are you doing? He whipped out this box and he started to drop, and I just grabbed him around the neck. “I went, don’t you f****** dare. I think I said, go down there, because there’s loads of people around and they’re all going to look at us and oh my god how embarrassing,” she said. “But not like ‘don’t propose, just how mortifyingly embarrassing, and then he opened the box, and the ring had flopped out of the little holder.”

The confession comes after Emma and Matt joined forces to present Netflix’s Love Is Blind UK. As part of the show, singletons date each other without ever seeing one another.
