Wanting to raise awareness at being diagnosed with cancer at such a young age, she decided to let the camera crew into her life at such a tough time. The cameras followed Amy from her initial diagnosis, to follow-up appointments and surgery in the hour-long BBC show Strictly Amy: Cancer and Me. Fans took to social media getting emotional over the documentary. One even posted just minutes into the documentary: “Four minutes in, and already I’m in awe of #AmyDowden. A third penned: “Oh my lord #AmyDowden is such an inspiration! I’ve spent the first 14 mins of this program sobbing, yet she’s incredibly strong!” And a fourth added: “I feel so sorry for Amy Dowden she didn’t deserve what has happened to her and I feel for her family and friends and it’s lovely to hear that she will be back on Strictly Come Dancing ”.

Fans have praised Amy down her bravery during her cancer battle

Amy’s parents, Richard and Gillian as well as Amy’s husband, Benjamin Jones see through her ordeal with her. Strictly’s Dianne Buswell also visits Amy following her mastectomy. And in one scene, Amy admitted she didn’t look at her breast after her mastectomy for “two weeks” before showing Dianne her newly constructed breast. Dianne then broke down in tears as she spoke to the camera about Amy wanting to return to Strictly and she said that when Amy does: “I hope I’m stood there beside her”.

In the documentary, Amy was hit by another blow about the news that she might experience fertility issues due to chemotherapy. Amy decided to freeze her eggs prior to chemotherapy treatment, which “destroys a lot of cells” in the body. “Your eggs, your ovaries, everything can be damaged and not necessarily reboot again. Since we got married, the question we’re asked the most is, ‘When are you going to have kids? ‘ and my body can’t go through that right now.” Amy revealed that what made her keep pushing through her treatment was dancing which she said made her “forget all my worries, stresses and pain in life”. She continued: “Strictly is something I worked all my life for and I wasn’t going to let cancer stop me from going back. I need that goal and purpose because I’m not sure what I would have done otherwise.” Amy has hinted she’ll be back for Strictly Come Dancing later this year when she was pictured at a rehearsal.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
