Privacy NoticeWynne Evans, known for his role in the Go Compare adverts, has bravely shared his mental health struggles following the breakdown of his first marriage. The 52 year old Welsh tenor faced an “irrational fear” after parting ways with Tanwen in 2016. The pair, who met during a British Youth Orchestra course and got engaged at Cardiff Central Station, married in 1999 and had two children, Ismay and Taliesin. However, after 17 years together, their relationship ended in divorce. The Strictly Come Dancing star has been candid about how the separation took a toll on his mental well-being, leading to clinical depression and significant weight gain, with Wynne tipping the scales at 22 stone. In a heartfelt interview earlier this year on BBC Radio Wales, he revealed the depth of his despair, even considering suicide at one point.

“It was almost like grief, but you can’t grieve for somebody that’s still there. So, it really affected my mental health, my confidence and my ego – it totally changed me as a person,” he shared poignantly. Wynne has courageously opened up about his past struggles with mental health, revealing the depth of his loneliness and fear. “It made me very aware of being alone. And, even though I was only 46, I had this irrational fear of dying on my own. I had very dark thoughts and very dark days where I would contemplate all sorts of terrible things. “I think it’s obvious what I’m saying, but I don’t want to say it because some people find it distressing. I’m fine to talk about it now, but at that time nothing would help me. I realised that I wanted my life to be over and I did some stupid things,” he bravely shared, reports the Mirror. During a particularly tough period post-divorce while presenting his BBC Radio Wales show, Wynne admitted he was close to the edge, yet had to maintain a positive demeanor. “The strapline of my show is, ‘cheering Wales up by one o’clock,’ but I was going through the worst depression, clinical depression,” he explained.”I would think about [suicide], I would try and action it… I couldn’t see a way out; I couldn’t see a way of ever being happy again.”

In a candid confession, Wynne spoke about how low he felt, saying, “I was feeling suicidal, and it was terrible… I just thought, I’m either going to do something terrible or I need to go and see a proper psychiatrist,” Thankfully, he sought help and now feels rejuvenated, stating he feels “alive again.” The Celebrity MasterChef champ has found romance anew with 50 year old events manager Liz Brookes, who’s been his cheerleader in the journey to fitness and weight loss. A pal close to the lovebirds spilled to The Sun about their meet-cute at an event and their chill pace. “He is in a much better place now than when his marriage ended. It’s like night and day – and he is so happy,” the source gushed. This week, professional dancer Katya Jones has stepped up to defend her Strictly Come Dancing partner Wynne after he received ‘online abuse’ following a ‘stupid joke that went wrong’. The duo left viewers puzzled after a couple of seemingly awkward ballroom exchanges, leading some to speculate that Wynne had made the Russian dancer feel uneasy. Katya seemed to brush off Wynne’s hand as he tried to place it on her waist in the first incident, and in the second, it looked like she rejected his high five attempt. Speaking to Fleur East on It Takes Two, Katya said: “The idea that it made me feel uncomfortable or offended in any way is total nonsense, and those that have doubts, you guys have got it wrong. So hopefully this will be the end of it, and you just keep making me smile. I can’t sit here watching this man being portrayed as someone he’s not.” If you’ve been affected by any of the issues in this story you can contact Samaritans in the UK and Ireland on freephone 116 123, or email jo@samaritans.org or jo@samaritans.ie.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
